Carmes Haut Brion 2019 has been released at €64.8 per bottle ex-negociant, down 6.1% on the 2018 release (€69). It is being offered by the international trade for £816 per 12×75, down 1.4% on the 2018 release (£828), which has since risen in value.
The wine featured as a top mover (moved from 105th to 61st place) in the 2019 Power 100.
Jane Anson (Decanter) was one of the few major critics to review the wine, awarding it 96 points. In her tasting note, she called it “extremely impressive” and “well balanced, with fine tannins and real discretion but hidden power and depths”. She also revealed that the “55% whole bunch fermentation” has brought the alcohol “down to this relatively low level for the estate’s location”. According to her, this is “a wine to surprise those who think Bordeaux can’t deliver understatement”. Jean-Marc Quarin also tasted today’s release and gave it 97 points.
Prices for Carmes Haut Brion are 68% correlated to ‘Benchmark Critic’ scores. Based on today’s release, a score of 92 points would make the wine appear ‘Fair Value’. Followers of Jane Anson and Jean-Marc Quarin will therefore find good value in the 2019 vintage.
Other vintages to consider include the 2012 (RP 94), which offers bottle age and is available at 11.8% discount.
