Ornellaia 2017 was released by UK merchants this morning at £1,800 per 12x75cl, an identical price to the 2016 release.
According to Antonio Galloni (Vinous), Ornellaia 2017 is “sumptuous and racy, as Ornellaias from warmer years tend to be, but it is not at all heavy or overdone. In a word: superb!” He awarded the wine 97 points.
Jancis Robinson also reviewed today’s release but was not as complimentary in her assessment, awarding the wine 16.5++. For her, the 2017 “definitely needs time”. She further remarked that she suspects it “will never be a really great vintage for Ornellaia”.
At this release price, the 2017 sits above most recent vintages (2007-2016) but below the 2006 which had a 12% increase in Market Price over the last year.
The 2016 has fallen 19%, to £1,460, since release. As the 2017 released at an identical price and carries the same score from Galloni, the market will determine whether it will suffer the same fate.
Ornellaia ranked in the second tier of Liv-ex Classification 2019. How it compares to other wines from the region and where it sits in the broader fine wine market can be found in our extended report on Italy. You can claim your complimentary copy (in English or Italian) using the form below.
