Solaia 2016 has been released at €168 per bottle ex-negociant, up 8% on the 2015 release (€155). It is being offered by the international trade for £2,100 per 12×75, an 11% increase on the 2015’s opening price per case (£1,890).
The Wine Advocate, which has reviewed previous vintages, has not yet scored today’s release. James Suckling, however, awarded the wine a perfect 100 points. In his tasting note he said he was “speechless” and added that the wine was “so structured and multidimensional”.
Suckling also commented that there was “20% less production than 2015”.
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) scored the wine a slightly lower 99 points but agreed that “the 2016 is an epic Solaia. That’s all there is to it”.
Today’s release is coming to the market above a number of recent vintages but below the 100-point 2015. Followers of Suckling and those confident in the quality of the 2016, might find something to be excited about.
