Pichon Baron 2018 has been released at €114 per bottle ex-negociant, up 18.8% on the 2017 (€96) and the same as the 2016 release. It is being offered by the trade for £1,404 per 12×75, up 19.5% on the 2017 release (£1,175).
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) scored the wine 94-97 points and said it was “exceptional”. He added that “the 2018 has a level of textural finesse that really elevates the wine into Pauillac’s upper echelon”.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (Wine Advocate) awarded a slightly higher score of 97-99 points and said it was “very long and perfumed. Beautiful”.
James Suckling also scored the wine favourably (97-98 points) and said it was a “great wine”.
Other commentators include Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider, 97-99), who said “this stunner will age and develop into one of the great vintages for Pichon Baron”. Chris Kissack (The Wine Doctor, 97-99) agreed and added that it has “brilliant potential”.
The 2018 is coming to market above most other vintages currently available: the 98-point (RP) 2009 is the only one that’s more expensive. Those confident that this year’s Pichon Baron will develop into one of the great vintages might find some value in today’s release. Alternatively, the 2015, which was scored 97 points by Neal Martin, is available at a 20% discount.
