Pavie 2018 has been released at €282 per bottle ex-negociant, up 2.2% on the release price of the 2017 (€276). It is being offered by the international trade at £3,504 (US$4,068/ HK$35,148) per 12×75, an increase of 4.3% on the 2017 release of £3,360 per case in sterling terms.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Advocate) found huge potential in today’s release, scoring it 97-100 points. According to her, it is an “amazing, singular wine – it could only be Pavie”. James Suckling awarded it a similar barrel range of 98-99 points and noted that “this is a very pretty and structured Pavie with a beautiful elegance and depth”.
While Antonio Galloni (Vinous) agreed that “the 2018 Pavie has so much to offer” and said he “can’t wait to taste it in bottle”, he gave the wine a lower 94-97 points score.
Other critics to have scored today’s release include Jeff Leve who awarded it “a wide score range” of 96-100 points, as he argued that “it is going to take up to 20 years to know if this wine morphs into a 100 Pt legend or not”. Julia Harding (Jancisrobinson.com), who scored it 17 points, also thought that “you have to be patient and like this style of wine to enjoy this”.
Prices for Pavie show 62% correlation to ‘Benchmark Critic’ scores. As the chart above shows, the 2018 Pavie comes at a premium to the price implied by our ‘Fair Value’ methodology. The wine is also more expensive than most other vintages available in the market, including the 100-point (RP) 2009 and 2010.
