Cos d’Estournel 2018 has been released at €144 per bottle ex-negociant, up 33.3% on 2017 (€108). This is also 19.4% more than the expected (not wanted) price of €120.60 by Liv-ex members.
The wine is being offered by the international trade at £1,776 per 12×75, an increase of 35.8% on the 2017 release of £1,308 per case.
Cos d’Estournel 2018 achieved a barrel range of 97-100 points by both Antonio Galloni (Vinous) and Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Advocate). In his tasting note, Galloni said that today’s release is “clearly one of the wines of the vintage”. Perrotti-Brown was also full of praise and noted that “amazing structure will keep this beauty for at least half a century and probably a full one”.
James Suckling awarded the wine 98-99 points and described it as “soft and gorgeous with silky tannins that really kick in at the finish”.
The Grand Vin was also among Matthew Jukes (20/20) and Chris Kissack’s (98-100) favourites. According to Kissack, “this is a divinely magnificent Cos d’Estournel which presents the substance of the vintage framed with precision in the best way possible”.
Coming to the market above a number of recent vintages, the 2018’s critical appraisal grants it the ‘Fair Value’ status. However, buyers might wish to consider the 2016, which boasts 100 points by Neal Martin, Perrotti-Brown and Suckling, and is currently available at a small discount to today’s release.
Cos d’Estournel Blanc 2018 was also released this morning at €92.40 per bottle ex-negociant, up 10% on the 2017 (€84).
