Carruades Lafite 2018 has been released at €180 per bottle ex-negociant, up 33% on the 2017 release (€135). It is being offered by the trade for £2,240 per 12×75, up 28% on the 2017 release (£1,750).
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) described this year’s Carruades as being “a very pretty second wine” and awarded 89-91 points.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (Wine Advocate) awarded a slightly higher score of 92-94 points. In her tasting note, she said that the wine had a “beautiful freshness to lift the long, earthy finish”.
James Suckling, on the other hand, gave the wine a barrel range of 95-96 points and said it was “special”.
Prices for Carruades Lafite have no correlation to critic scores. Instead prices step up on becoming physical and then trade in a steady range of £2,600 to £2,900 depending on age (and availability). Today’s release fills one of the fundamental tenants of buying En Primeur: you cannot buy this wine any cheaper in any vintage.
