Canon 2018 has just been released at €84 per bottle ex-negociant, up 27.3% on the 2017 opening price of €66. It is being offered by the international trade at £1,044 per 12×75, up 28.9% on the 2017’s release of £810 per 12×75.
James Suckling (98-99) said the wine was “superb and focused […] classy all the way”. In his tasting note, Suckling also posed the question whether the 2018 is the “new 1955?”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Advocate) awarded the wine a similar barrel range of 97-99 and described the palate as “wonderfully soft-spoken, whispering of fragrant floral and earthy scents”.
For Antonio Galloni (Vinous, 94-97), today’s release is “dark, powerful and full of personality”.
Prices for Canon show strong correlation to critic scores. At this level, the 2018 represents good value, falling below the trend line, when Galloni, Perrotti-Brown and Suckling’s scores are considered. It is also available at a discount to both the 2015 and 2016, which have risen in value since release.
