Trade this week rose by both value and volume. Bordeaux’s trade share by value increased to 61%, supported by activity for Mouton Rothschild, which accounted for over half of the First Growths’ trade.
Burgundy’s trade share dipped slightly – to a still strong 23.8% – after its recent high last week. Italy saw a more considerable decline, from 8.7% to 2.3%. The Rhone, the USA and the ‘others’ category improved to 4.3%, 0.5% and 2% respectively.
The top traded wine by value this week was Mouton Rothschild 2016, which has recently received 100-point scores from critics including James Suckling, Neal Martin, Lisa Perotti-Brown and Antonio Galloni. The wine last traded at £5,170 per 12×75, marginally below (-0.2%) its En Primeur release price. The chateau’s 2000 vintage also featured among the top five, last trading at £18,606 per 12×75.
Leoville Las Cases 2009 took the second spot; when tasting it in 2011, Robert Parker said it “may be the most open-knit and forward Las Cases I have tasted to date”. Earlier this month, Lisa Perotti-Brown MW gave it 99 points, and described it as “concentrated and decadent in the mouth”. Two DRC assortments, from 1999 and 2009, also found the bid this week.
