Over the past few weeks, Wine Enthusiast has announced their Top 100 Best Buys of 2018 and their best of the best, The Enthusiast 100, in which Michele Chiarlo 2015 Cipressi took first place. As part of their annual reviews, the magazine also published its Top 100 Cellar Selections – a list of wines that they deem worthy of collection.
Wine Enthusiast revealed that “this elite grouping” covers some of the “classic regions in France, Italy, Spain and Germany”, as well as “many stellar examples from South Africa, Australia, Argentina, California and beyond”. They further commented that “ageable bottles come from all over the globe, and run the full gamut from white to red, sparkling and sweet”.
Looking at their top 10 investment wines affirms these statements. The list includes six wines that have been awarded the 100 points by the publication, and spans a First Growth, a Port and a Champagne among others.
Lafite Rothschild 2015 occupies the top spot. Wine Enthusiast described it as “solid, complex and with great authority”; a wine that “will age for many years”. The vintage last traded on Liv-ex at £5,298 per 12×75.
James Suckling also chose a Bordeaux 2015, namely Canon, as his wine of the year in his report ‘Savour the Greatness’. Wine Spectator looked to the same vintage in Italy with the selection of Sassicaia 2015 last week. Following these announcements, both wines traded at all-time highs, seeing a flurry of activity.
As a First Growth, Lafite Rothschild 2015 has already been traded heavily in the secondary market. Other wines from the list that are rather active at this time of the year and come at a lower price point include Graham, Stone Terraces 2016 and Pol Roger, Sir Winston Churchill 2008. Collectors have a wide variety to choose from.
