Talking Trade – new releases and Haut Brion 2009 most traded wine

  • Champagne and Italy’s trade share rise
  • First Growths at a recent high
  • Haut Brion 2009 most active wine
  • New releases from Australia
  • Vieux Chateau Certan 2001 hits new record

Trade by both volume and value dipped slightly this week. The Liv-ex 50 Index, which tracks the price of the First Growths, was down 0.7% on last week, closing on 356.39.

At the same time, the First Growths’ activity increased as they accounted for 24.8% of the total value, which marks a recent high.

Champagne and Italy’s trade share rose, to 8.3% and 13.4% respectively. All other regions pulled back on last week. Only the Rest of the World maintained its level.

A First Growth was the most active wine by value this week – Haut Brion 2009. It last traded on Liv-ex at £6,300 per 12×75. It was followed by Mouton Rothschild 2012 and Petit Mounton 2016, with a Burgundy and a Champagne representative also making it into the top five.

Domaine Leroy, whose Corton Renardes 2011 was actively traded this week, has climbed the rankings in this year’s Power 100. Our annual list of the most powerful brands in the fine wine market will be released in the next few weeks.

Record exposure

Exposure – the total value of bids and offers on Liv-ex – has reached record levels. It has doubled in the last three years, and now stands at just over £50million. We will post more on this next week.

New releases

This week saw the release of the full Penfolds 2018 collection. Penfolds Grange 2014, which was awarded 98 points from The Wine Advocate’s Joe Czerwinski, is being offered by the international trade at £4,140 per 12×75. See detailed price analysis here.

Vieux Chateau Certan 2001 trades at an all-time high

The vintage has climbed steadily since release, proving resistant to ups and downs in the wider fine wine market.  It traded at £1,750 per 12×75 this week after receiving a perfect 100 points from Decanter’s Jane Anson earlier in the month. To read more, please click here.
