There have been a number of changes at Troplong Mondot over the past 12 months. In July 2017, French insurance company Scor announced that it had purchased the Chateau for an undisclosed fee. A month later, Managing Director Aymeric de Gironde, confirmed his move to from Cos d’Estournel to Troplong Mondot.
This year’s Troplong Mondot has divided opinion among critics. Neal Martin scored the wine 91-93 points. In his tasting note he commented that “this is a much fresher and balanced style of Troplong Mondot that tended to be over-egged in the past”. He goes on to say, “if this represents how the estate will continue, then the new era is going to be festooned with some exemplary wines”.
His colleague, Antonio Galloni, was more generous and scored the wine 95-98 points. Galloni commented that this year’s release was a “major stylistic shift”, making it “easily one of the wines of the vintage”.
In a recent interview with Liv-ex, Galloni discusses Troplong Mondot and the differences between his and Neal Martin’s scores. To read the interview, click here.
