Smith Haut Lafitte 2017 has been released at €67.20 per bottle ex-negociant, down 12.5% on the 2016 release of €76.80. It is being offered by the trade at £825 per 12×75, a decrease of 10.3% in sterling terms on the 2016 release of £920 per case.
Neal Martin (Vinous) said that the wine “feels very cohesive and comes replete with a detailed and nuanced finish that might lack the flair and volume of the 2016, but it is certainly sustained and persistent”. He scored the wine 93-95 points.
James Suckling (JamesSuckling.com) was also impressed. He awarded a barrel range of 95-96 points and noted the wine has “excellent potential”.
Prices for Smith Haut Lafitte are 89% correlated to score. Based on today’s release of £825 per 12×75, Liv-ex’s ‘fair value’ methodology places the 2017 above the trend line.
Buyers looking for value may wish to consider the 2012, which carries a higher score and is available at a 24% discount to today’s release. The 97-point 2016 also offers relative value.
Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc 2017 was released at €80.40, up 12% on the 2016 release of €72. It is being offered by the trade at £995 per 12×75, a 16% increase on the 2016 (£860). Critics have been full of praise for this year’s white wine. Lisa Perott-Brown (The Wine Advocate) scored the wine 96-98+ points and described it as “polished, sophisticated and wonderfully electric in the mouth”.
