Pichon Lalande 2017 has been released at €90 per bottle ex-negociant, down 25% on the 2016’s release price of €120. It is being offered by the international trade at £1,116 per 12×75.
At this price, it has entered the market below the current values of the ‘great’ vintages, but at a premium to several others. Arguably, its critical reception comes close to justifying the price tag. As the chart below shows, the new vintage is around £100 above the wine’s ‘fair value‘, which followers of the estate may consider acceptable.
It is also lower than expected by Liv-ex members, who predicted a release price of €102.19 on average in a recent survey.
Several critics comment on the ageability of this year’s Pichon Lalande. Neal Martin (Vinous) called it, “a wine that is going to require more cellaring than its peers”, and scored it 93-95. His colleague Antonio Galloni appeared to agree. He described it as “a powerful Pichon Comtesse that is not ready to show all of its cards” and awarded it 92-95. Decanter‘s Jane Anson called it one of her wines of the vintage, “no question”. She scored it 94.
Volumes of Pichon Lalande are down 15% on last year.
Among the back vintages, the 2014 will strongly stand out to collectors seeking relative value. At £900, it is available at a 19% discount to today’s release and well below its ‘fair value‘. The wine has received high scores from several critics including Neal Martin who scored it 95 in bottle, and during En Primeur tastings described its quality as being within touching distance of the First Growths’.
Reserve Comtesse 2017 has also been released today. It came out at €28.8 per bottle ex-negociant, down 4% on the 2016 release (€30). Volumes of this wine are down 30%, due largely to frost.
