Petit Mouton 2017 has been released at €144 per bottle ex-negociant, a 9.1% increase on the 2016’s opening price of €132. It is being offered by the trade at £1,788 per 12×75.
Petit Mouton, along with the other second wines, has been on the rise for an extended period of time. Over the past year, the Petit Mouton Index is up 24.5%, positioning it among the top performers in Bordeaux.
Despite the higher release price, the 2017 is the cheapest vintage on the market – 10.6% below the current price of the 2016 which has made gains over the past year. This will make it look attractive to collectors of the Mouton brand.
The Wine Advocate’s Lisa Perotti-Brown MW scored the wine 89-91+, noting its “fairly muscular character at this stage and a long, earthy finish.” Jane Anson, writing for Decanter, scored it a similar 91. She commented: “This doesn’t quite have the exuberant joy of most vintages, but is extremely well put together.”
The volume of Petit Mouton offered is down 40% on last year. According to Antonio Galloni’s notes, production is down 28% due to a challenging end to the growing season for the Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The Vinous critic called the wine “dense, powerful and luscious” and scored it 90-92 points.
Neal Martin did not score the wine. After two tastings, he still felt that “it needed a little more time” and hopes to review it later in the year.
