Pavie Decesse 2017 has been released at €86.40 per bottle ex-negociant, down 10% on the 2016 opening price of €96. It is being offered by the trade at £1,092 per 12×75.
Like Troplong Mondot, which was also released this morning, Pavie Decesse has divided opinion among Vinous duo Neal Martin and Antonio Galloni. Martin scored it a low 90-92, commenting that it, “just cuts away a little swiftly at the moment and the wood tannins feel quite dominant.” Galloni awarded a higher 93-96 and called it an, “undeniably racy, sexy Saint-Emilion.”
Their former colleague, Lisa Perotti Brown MW, was even more effusive. She scored it 96-97. According to her notes, there was no frost at this vineyard in 2017 due to its elevation. Decanter‘s Jane Anson described it as “a big wine…those shoulders are ripe for carrying” and awarded 93 points.
At £1,092 it is above all other recent ‘off’ vintages, and on par with the 2016, giving collectors plenty of alternative options. The high-scoring 2012 (Robert Parker), for example, is available at 13% discount to today’s release. It will all depend on who collectors choose to follow.
