Mission Haut Brion 2017 has been released at €240 per bottle ex-negociant, 28.6% lower than the opening price of the 2016 (€336). This is a larger decrease than predicted by Liv-ex members in our annual En Primeur survey, who expected a fall of 15.6% on average. It is being offered by the international trade for £2,760 per case, down 30.3% in sterling terms on the 2016 release price of £3,960 per 12×75.
The chateau has decided to reduce volumes coming to market by 30% on last year.
Critics have enjoyed this year’s Mission Haut Brion but are divided in their praise. Neal Martin, who awarded the wine 93 to 95 points, commented that the 2017 is “sultry out of the barrel” but also “superb”. However for Matthew Jukes, who scored the wine 19+/20, it was “one of the wines of the vintage”.
Today’s opening price comes with an exceptionally large premium of over 85% to the price implied by Liv-ex ‘s fair value methodology. Fans of Mission Haut Brion would be better off considering higher scoring vintages such as 2008, 2012 and 2014, which are all available in the market for between £1700 – £1900.
Mission Haut Brion Blanc has also been released this morning at €480 per bottle ex-negociant, the same release price as the 2016 and 2015. It is being sold by the UK trade by £5,916 per 12×75.
