Grand Puy Lacoste 2017 has been released at €52.80 per bottle ex-negociant, down 12% on the 2016 release of €60. It is being offered by the trade at £648 per 12×75, a decrease of 12% in sterling terms on the 2016 release of £735 per case.
Critical reception for this year’s Grand Puy Lacoste has been positive. Neal Martin (Vinous) scored the wine 91-93 points and described it as “simply a very likeable Grand Puy Lacoste in the making”. Chris Kissack (The Wine Doctor) was also full of praise and awarded the same barrel rating of 91-93 points. In his tasting note, Kissack said “this has, I suspect, made the very best of this difficult vintage”.
Grand Puy Lacoste was voted Liv-ex members’ top value wine of Bordeaux 2017 for the eighth year in a row. However, it should be noted that the category stipulates that ‘value wines’ were those with an expected release price below £500. Following today’s release, one Twitter user was quick to comment: “surely about time [Grand Puy Lacoste] moved out of Liv-ex’s good value category in their survey. As much as I’ve loved it in the past, [it’s] too pricey now”.
The market will decide.
Buyers perusing back vintages may find better value in the 2014 vintage which carries a higher score (93 NM) and a lower price than today’s release. The 2015 and 2009 vintages also look attractive alternatives.
Lacoste Borie has also been released at €18 per bottle ex-negociant, down 3% on the 2016 release of €18.60.
