Carmes Haut Brion 2017 has been released at €54 per bottle ex-negociant, down 4.3% on the 2016’s opening price of €56.4. It is being offered by the trade for £672 per 12×75.
At this price, the wine is below its ‘fair value’, as the chart below shows. Widely recognised as a brand on the move, this is likely to attract attention from collectors. An alternative vintage of interest is the 2012, which has 94 points and is offered at £560.
Neal Martin awarded 92-94 points to the 2017, positioning it among the better vintages from the estate. His Vinous colleague Antonio Galloni was effusive about the wine/. He described it as, “positively stellar…not an obvious wine, but it sure is gorgeous. Don’t miss it!” With 93-96, it was among his highest scorers of the vintage.
According to Jane Anson’s report for Decanter, the vines around the main Carmes Haut Brion estate were not affected by frost. However, the vines in Martillac used to produce Le C de Carmes were badly hit. She scored it 94, calling it “rather gorgeous”.
The volume of Carmes Haut Brion offered onto the market has been reduced by 15% this year.
