Canon 2017 has been released at €66 per bottle ex-negociant, down 8% on the 2016 opening price of €72. It is being offered by the trade at £810 per 12×75.
At this price, it is pitched above recent ‘off’ vintages but below the greats. As the chart below shows, the price is a touch above ‘fair value’, but given the estate’s strong following, it may well work.
Canon has attracted increasing attention in recent years, particularly since the 2015 vintage prompted Neal Martin to speculate over a possible promotion for the estate in the next St Emilion Classification.
The 2017 vintage has a number of positive critic reviews. Neal Martin scored it 92-94 but predicted that it would settle at the top of this range. Though not achieving the heights of 2015 or 2016 according to the critic, he calls it “a damn fine St. Emilion.” His Vinous colleague Antonio Galloni, who favoured the Right Bank in 2017, called this year’s Canon “rich, explosive… a wine of real pedigree” (93-96).
Those seeking value in the back vintages may be interested in the keenly priced and highly scored 2014.
Fellow Chanel-owned estate Rauzan Segla has also released today. It came out below its ‘fair value’. Collectors losing interest in this campaign over recent weeks finally have some interesting wines to choose from.
