Chris Kissack has published a series of articles on Bordeaux 2017 on his website, winedoctor.com.
Kissack commented that trying to provide a summary of the 2017 En Primeur tastings was “easier said than done” as “this is a vintage of extremely heterogeneous quality, and it is impossible to provide a truly succinct summary on a regional or even an appellation level”.
He goes on to say that “in many appellations [he] found excellent wines, close to the level of quality seen in 2016 or 2015”. However, he adds that he also tasted wines from the same appellations that were the “polar opposite” and suggested that “you can certainly taste the frost in this vintage”.
Kissack continues that “it is difficult to predict whether or not the primeur campaign will be a good one, as there are varying pressures pushing prices both up and down”. Overall, he says that “as it stands, it seems to me there is (sadly) more of an upwards than downwards pressure on price”.
Kissack’s top red from the vintage was Petrus, which he scored 97-99 points. Liv-ex members also voted Petrus wine of the vintage in this year’s En Primeur survey. In his tasting note, he noted that “all in all, [Petrus] is a stunning wine which will go the distance”. He added that “it is the closest in style and quality to 2016 and 2015 [he has] found in the 2017 vintage”.
