Yesterday, Liv-ex looked at the price variations of the Bordeaux Right Bank wines from the 2008 vintage. The chart below displays the same data for the 2008 wines of the Sauternes 50 sub-index of the Bordeaux 500.
Unlike its previous vintage, the 2008 growing season in Sauternes was particularly tough. Jane Anson has commented that Sauternes was almost as badly hit by frost in 2008 as it was in 1991 and 2017.
Thanks to its position on the top of the hill, Yquem was fortunate enough to escape frost damage. In Neal Martin’s latest tasting note he compared Yquem 2008 to Tina Turner – “simply the best” – and awarded the wine 96 points. Yquem 2008 is the only wine within the Sauternes 50 to hold its value since release, up 2.9%. Perhaps Neal Martin was on to something, as in this case the wine is indeed better than all the rest.
All the other wines in the Sauternes 50 have fallen since release. Rieussec 2008 has fallen the most, down 27%.
