Yesterday, Liv-ex looked at the price variations of the Bordeaux First Growths from the 2008 vintage. The chart above displays the same data for their second wines.
All five have made staggering gains since En Primeur. In fact, since release, the three top performing wines within the Bordeaux 500 are Pavillon Rouge, Petit Mouton and Carruades Lafite.
Pavillon Rouge 2008, which was released at the lowest price, has gained the most. It is up 442% since release. The wine is now just 3% off the peak price it achieved in 2009 and currently commands a Market Price of £1,620 per 12×75.
Petit Mouton 2008 followed behind with an increase of 367% since release. It has made strong gains over the last five years and is the best performer over this period, up 90%.
Like its first wine, Carruades Lafite achieved the highest price at peak, driven by strong demand in Asia. In 2009, the wine reached £3,800 per 12×75.
Clarence Haut Brion 2008 has gained the least since release, but is still up an impressive 121%. Of the Second Wines, it has one of the highest scores from Neal Martin (reviewed in 2012), but continues to lag behind in terms of price.
Scores shown are the latest from Neal Martin (Wine Advocate or Vinous)
