In the last few months both Opus One and Dominus have released their 2014 vintage. Opus One was successfully offered with much fanfare via the Place de Bordeaux, while Dominus’s route to market avoids La Place, as is the way with Moueix wines.
The table above compares the last ten vintages of the two wines. For every vintage other than the 2011, Dominus has a higher critic score. However, the wine’s Market Price is lower for every vintage other than 2013.
The average euro per bottle price of Opus is 56.3% more expensive than Dominus. It’s likely that this divergence in price can be attributed to the strength of the Opus brand and its distribution via La Place, rather than scarcity. Dominus is produced in much smaller quantities, with around 5,000 cases being produced compared to 25,000 for Opus One.
For buyers that follow Robert Parker’s palate Dominus arguably offers good value for money, with the 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011 vintages all currently offered on Liv-ex. Alternatively fans of Opus One can find the 2010, 2012 and 2014 vintages all live.
