Following on from yesterday’s post highlighting the best and worst performing Bordeaux wines this year, the table above shows the top traded wines by value thus far in 2017.
Perhaps unsurprisingly the recently physical Lafite Rothschild 2014 tops the table, having traded nearly double the value of Montrose 2010, which places second. The new releases of popular brands such as Sassicaia and Ponsot Clos Roche Vv place 4th and 5th respectively, given the heavy trading that occurred after their releases onto the market.
It is an overall strong performance from the Lafite Rothschild stable, which contributes five vintages. Lafite 2009 and 2010 are the only wines to have featured in the table both this year and last.
The heavy trading of Mouton 2005 and Montrose 2010 coincides with alterations to their Wine Advocate score. In January Mouton 2005 was upgraded from 97 to 98 points, whereas in March Montrose 2010 was downgraded from 100 points to 99 points. While the wine is now officially a Wine Advocate 99, it will be interesting to see if the market continues to treat this wine as a Robert Parker 100. A clue might be found in the price, which has increased 1.5% since the end of March.
