Pichon Lalande has been released at €120 per bottle ex-negociant, a 25% increase on 2015 release price of €96. It is being offered by the international trade at £1,420 per 12×75, up 42.7% in sterling terms on the 2015 release price of £995 per case.
Critics have been effusive in their praise of this year’s Pichon Lalande. Neal Martin awarded the wine a score of 96-98 points, commenting that “this is probably just a notch up on the outstanding 2015 Pichon-Lalande, a Rolls Royce with a purring engine.” James Suckling, who scored the wine 96-97 points, also wondered whether it was “better than 2015?”.
Prices for Pichon Lalande are closely correlated to critic scores (Wine Advocate). Pichon Lalande 2016 is entering the market as the highest scoring and most expensive of all recent vintages. Despite the eye-catching price level, it is only 1.4% above the price suggested by Liv-ex’s ‘fair-value’ methodology.
Buyers unconvinced by this release might be interested in the value offered by the 2015, which can be purchased at a 22.5% discount to today’s opening price.
