Pichon Baron 2016 has been released at €114 per bottle ex-negociant, an 18.7% increase on the 2015 price of €96. It is being offered by UK merchants for £1,350 per 12×75, up 35.7% in sterling terms on the 2015 release of £995 per case.
Critics have rated this year’s Pichon Baron as one of the finest ever. James Suckling, who awarded a score of 98-99 points, commented that the wine is “a remake of the legendary 1990 Pichon Baron.” Neal Martin also compared this year’s offering favourably to past releases, noting that “this is a majestic Pichon-Baron and it may well surpass both the 2009 or 2010.”
Prices for Pichon Baron show some correlation to critic score (Wine Advocate). This year’s vintage is entering the market at the same price level as the higher scoring 2009 and is now the joint most expensive vintage since Pichon Baron 1990. According to the Liv-ex’s ‘fair-value’ methodology this is 16.5% above the expected price for a wine of this score.
Buyers looking for value might rather intuitively be drawn to the 2015, which is available at a 25.6% discount to today’s opening price. Further support comes from the fact it carries the same Wine Advocate score, and was also described by Neal Martin as “up there with the 2009 or 2010,” – just without the same price tag.
