Mouton Rothschild 2016 has been released at €420 per bottle ex-negociant, a 9.4% increase on the 2015 opening price of €384. It is being offered by UK merchants for £5,184 per case, up 24.6% in sterling terms on the 2015 release of £4,160 per 12×75. This offer is coming out as a single tranche, and rather unusually for this campaign, at the same volume as last year.
Critics have highly praised this year’s Mouton. Both James Suckling and Jean-Marc Quarin scored the wine 100 points. Neal Martin awarded a score of 98-100 points, praising the wine’s “precision and opulence” and noting that “whichever artist eventually designs the label is going to be drinking well.” Support can also be found from Liv-ex members, who rated this year’s Mouton Rothschild as the second best wine of the vintage.
Prices for Mouton Rothschild show some correlation to critic scores (Wine Advocate). The 2016 vintage is entering the market with the highest critic score of recent vintages, placing it on a level with the highly rated 2010. Its opening price is roughly 10% below the price suggested by Liv-ex’s ‘fair value’ methodology, giving consumers some of the discount they would hope to gain through buying En Primeur. Buyers looking for value might be interested in the 2015, which carries a high score of 98 points and is currently priced 12% below than this year’s Mouton.
