Margaux 2016 has been released at €420 per bottle ex-negociant, a 9.7% increase on the 2015 opening price of €384. It is being offered by the international trade for £5,184 per 12×75, up 21.9% in sterling terms on the 2015 release of £4,250 per case.

Of the First Growths, Margaux has received the greatest variation in scores and is the only chateau to miss out on a straight 100-point score from any of the critics. Jean-Marc Quarin scored the wine 99-100; Rebecca Gibb MW awarded it just 92 points, calling it “super delicate”.

Neal Martin, on the other hand, said “the aftertaste is so long you could probably write a letter to your friend enthusing about this wine before [it] fades” (97-99).

Liv-ex members, voted this year’s Margaux as the fourth best wine of the vintage.

Margaux 2016

Prices for Margaux are 95% correlated to Wine Advocate score. Based on today’s opening price of £5,184 per 12×75, the 2016 vintage is entering the market 5.7% below the price suggested by Liv-ex’s ‘fair value’ methodology.

Of the back vintages, the 2012 and 2014 vintages might look attractive.

Pavillon Rouge 2016

Pavillon Rouge has also been released at €114 per bottle ex-negociant, up 11.7% on the 2015 opening price of €102. It is available from UK merchants for £1,380 per 12×75, up 21% on the 2015 release (£1,140).

At this price, the 2016 vintage is the priced below all the recent vintages available on the secondary market.

Neal Martin scored the wine 91-93 points. He described the wine as having “a very pure redcurrant and cranberry scented bouquet with a touch of graphite”.
