Cantenac Brown 2016 has been released at €39 per bottle ex-negociant, a 16.1% increase on the 2015 price of €33.60. It is being offered by UK merchants for £474 per 12×75, up 35.4% in sterling terms on the 2015 release of £350 per case.
Critical reception for this year’s offering has been mixed. Neal Martin awarded the wine 92-94, praising the wine as “equal to the impressive 2015 Cantenac Brown.” Jancis Robinson was less effusive, despite scoring the wine 16+, she thought this year’s vintage was “an attempt at glamour”.
Prices for Cantenac Brown are not closely correlated to critic scores. Instead they follow the traditional pricing pattern for fine wine where vintages appreciate in price with the passing of time, as the chart below shows.
This year’s vintage is entering the market at a higher price than 2010, and just below the 2005 and 2006 vintages. Buyers looking for wine of a comparable quality at a fairer price might be interested in the 2015, which as Neal Martin suggests, is equal to this year’s offering in terms of quality.
