Malescot St Exupery 2016 has been released at €41 per bottle ex-negociant, up 17.8% on 2015’s release price (€34.8). It is being offered by the trade at £500 per 12×75. This is 36.4% higher than the open price for the 2015 in sterling terms.
The wine has mostly been praised by critics. Neal Martin (94-96) commented that it is “one of the best Malescot-St-Exupery[s] that [he has] tasted and it is wonderful.” James Suckling was even more effusive about the “superb” wine, awarding it 98-99. Jancis Robinson, however, commented: “This bottle anyway is a disappointment in the context of the vintage. Austere.”
As the chart below shows, there is a strong correlation between critic scores (Wine Advocate) and prices for Malescot St Exupery. At £500, the wine falls comfortably below the trend line, suggesting that it does offer relative value to buyers. Followers of Martin are unlikely to be disappointed.
