Clos Marquis 2016 has been released at €39.60 ex-negociant, up 10% on 2015 (€36). It is being offered by the international trade at £470 per 12×75, up 22% on last year’s release of £385. At this price, the new release is higher than all recent back vintages available in the secondary market.
However, Clos Marquis 2016 has received a lot of praise from critics and is currently the highest scoring vintage. Neal Martin awarded the wine 93-95 points and said that “the palate is beautiful, perhaps one of the most powerful that I came across in Saint Julien”, adding that “this is a majestic Clos du Marquis, but it will require several years in the cellar”.
The similarly-scored 2009 might stand out to buyers seeking relative value. It is available at £415, 11.7% below the 2016.
