On Friday, James Suckling released further scores for Bordeaux 2016. Having tasted over 1,000 samples, he suggests that the vintage is “an excellent year, producing dynamic and well-structured wines that are fresh and balanced”.
Overall, he says that 2016 is “a Left Bank year”, noting that “vineyards in the Medoc and Graves – particularly in the north such as St. Estephe and Pauillac – capitalised on swings in the weather”.
In the recent report, Haut Brion was awarded a straight 100 points, joining Mouton Rothschild and Lafite as the wines that appear to have achieved perfection.
Suckling described Haut Brion as a wine that “grabs you by the shoulder and tells you its great”, adding that it “reminds [him] of the great 1998 but in a modern and bright style”.
Suckling notes the differences between the 2016 and 2015 vintages but concludes that “2015 may be better overall than 2016, though it [2016] remains one of the best years for fine wines in the last two decades”.
