Firsts against their seconds – by brand

By November 9, 2016Bordeaux, Regions

In October, Liv-ex wrote that the price gap between the First Growths and their second wines has been shrinking. Back in July 2007, it was possible to buy 6.6 bottles of second wines for every bottle of the Grand Vin on average. This has now halved to 3.3.

When broken down by brand, Petit Mouton is currently the most expensive second wine relative to its first. At present, Mouton Rothschild is just 2.6 times more expensive than Petit Mouton on average.

The wine has been among the top performers of the Bordeaux 500 index over one year: its index – reflecting the price movements of the ten most recent physical vintages – has increased by 44.5%.

In an interview with Liv-ex earlier this year, Mouton’s Managing Director Philippe Dhalluin put Petit Mouton’s success down to “rigorous selection”, adding that “it is produced from plots that were formerly used for Mouton.” It, along with other seconds, can now be more difficult to obtain than its first wine at En Primeur release.

Clarence Haut Brion carries the lowest price tag and is also the cheapest compared to its first wine: on average it is possible to buy 5.3 bottles of Clarence Haut Brion for each bottle of Haut Brion.
