Pavie and Angelus, two of the Right Bank “First Growths”, were released this morning. Both came out at €252 per bottle ex-negociant, up 40% on their 2014 release prices of €180. They are both being offered by the international trade at £2,680 per 12×75.
Pavie’s release price positions it close to the heights of the 2005, 2009 and 2010. Each of these have been scored 100 points by Robert Parker.
Critic reviews of the 2015 have been mixed. Pavie was among the seven wines of 2015 awarded a straight 100 points by James Suckling. He commented: “this redefines Pavie … it is the essences of Pavie”. Neal Martin called it “a great Pavie with a very long life ahead” and scored it 96-98. James Molesworth scored it 95-98; Tim Atkin just 90 points.
Angelus 2015 was scored more highly by James Suckling than Neal Martin. According to Suckling (99-100), “this shows the purity of Angelus”. Martin (95-97) commented: “Oh là là. This is a sexy, but compelling Angelus, fit for “007” and wine-lovers everywhere.”
An opening price of £2,680 for Angelus 2015 places it at around the same level as 2009, 2010 and 2012. The 2009 and 2010 have both been awarded 99+ points from Robert Parker while the 2012 was released in a commemorative black and gold bottle. These might look appealing to buyers looking to the back vintages.
