Tuscan fortunes

By September 25, 2012Italy, Regions

As we noted in July’s Market Report, the Super Tuscans have outperformed the Liv-ex 50 over a five year period.  In September’s Market Report we tracked the performance of the five top brands —Masseto, Ornellaia, Tignanello, Sassicaia and Solaia — on an individual basis (vintages 1999-2008).

As you can see from the chart below, Masseto has been the top performing Super Tuscan over a five year period, with a total price increase of 110%. Of particular interest is Sassicaia. Until August 2009 its performance significantly lagged that of its peers (at 7%, as opposed to 30%+ ). Since then, however, the brand has more than kept pace, with a 40% rise in prices. Solaia, one of the top performers in 2009, has actually fallen in price over the last three years (-1%).

Solaia is also the only Super Tuscan not to have traded so far in September. By value, Ornellaia and Sassicaia have each accounted for a third of Italian trade, with the 2009 proving the most popular vintage for both. In James Suckling’s recent report on his 100 top Super Tuscans in 2012 he listed Solaia among his favourite 2009s, awarding it 97 points. So far it is not tempting buyers. Back in June, steady trade for Solaia was boosting the region’s turnover. Has it fallen from favour?
