As we noted in the Cellar Watch July Market Report, the Super Tuscan 50 Index (composed of the last ten vintages of Masseto, Tignanello, Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Solaia) has outperformed the Liv-ex 50 since June 2007, seeing a five-year return of 76%.
On Liv-ex there is continued trade of Italian wines. This week Ornellaia 2009 (L-WIN 1102024) has proved popular, with more bottles traded than Lafite 2009 (L-WIN 1011872). The key difference is the price: while the latter is trading for in excess of £7,000, the former is at just £970.
Ornellaia 2009 may not be as revered a wine as Lafite 2009, but it nevertheless carries a score of 96 from James Suckling. At under £85 a bottle, it is significantly cheaper than any of the First Growths, which range from £500 – £800 per bottle.
The appreciable variation in pricing of the 2009s is shown below: Ornellaia is less than a sixth of the cost of the cheapest Premier Cru, Margaux. Offering solid scores in addition to relative value for money, it is no wonder that top Italian wines are drawing in the buyers.
