By December 15, 2011Fine Wine Market

The Liv-ex Claret Chip Index edged down 0.9 per cent last week to 345.78. Falls were relatively evenly spread across the First Growths, though Lafite was the biggest loser by a small margin.

Margaux was the only brand to nudge higher last week, with the wines increasing in value by an average of 1.3 per cent. The 2008 and 2003 vintages were largely behind the push, having risen 4.4 per cent and 3.6 per cent respectively. Despite regaining lost ground, the 2008 remains around 36 per cent off its February peak.

The chart below show's the individual paths of the First Growths since December 2010.

Claret Chip Index by brand
Demand for the Firsts has cooled this year and prices have headed south. Although Haut Brion rose rapidly during the first quarter, it failed to maintain momentum in the second half of the year and prices returned to the starting line. The rest of the Firsts have posted even heftier losses, with Lafite descending 23 per cent year to date, and Latour and Margaux falling more than 15 per cent.
