Dom Perignon 2002: “line up the truck”

By August 17, 2010Critic Reviews

The 2002 vintage of Dom Perignon went on sale for the first time today, a few weeks shy of the wine’s scheduled physical release in September. The champagne house’s most recent offering is expected to glean glowing reviews from the major critics, having already received 96 points from Antonio Galloni of the Wine Advocate – "flashy, opulent". And there's little doubting Robert Parker's enthusiasm. Earlier this year he admonished those following his public message board: “2002 DP…..call your bank…line up the truck…September 2010 release…"

The wine is currently bid on the exchange at £360 per 6x75cl case and is widely offered by merchants at £420 – just above the 2000, which is trading at £390 per case (RP 94). And though the 2000, 1999 (RP 93; £450) and 1998 (RP 92; £420) all seem to represent good value, the 2002 may well be a solid buy should its Parker score meet expectations. A glimpse into its potential value, the ever-popular 1996 (RP 98) is currently trading at £900 per case, whilst the 1990 (RP 96) and 1985 (RP 96) have both tipped £1,000.
