Château Mouton Rothschild 2023 released En Primeur

  • Château Mouton Rothschild 2023 has been released at £4,068 per 12×75.   
  • Neal Martin awarded a barrel score of 96-98 points, calling it ‘focused and harmonious’.  
  • At this price, the 2023 vintage presents reasonable value to those who can secure an allocation. 

As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Château Mouton Rothschild 2023 has been released at €324 per bottle ex-négociant, a decrease of 37.2% from the 2022 release (€516 per bottle).   

The release occurred on the 6th of May, over the UK bank holiday.  

It is being offered by the international trade for £4,068, down 34.6% on the 2022’s opening price (£6,216 a case).   

 Château Mouton Rothschild has consistently remained in the top 20 of the Liv-ex Power 100 over the last 6 years.  

At this price, the new release offers reasonable value, however buyers also have options in back-vintages. See more pricing analysis below.    

Critical response 

Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded a score of 96-98 points, adding that he ‘may ultimately end up preferring it over the 2022’.  

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) scored the wine 95-97 points, describing ‘notes of freshly crushed blackcurrants and wild blueberries leading to touches of clove oil, lavender, star anise, and black truffle with a hint of wild sage’. 

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) said the wine was ‘shaping up to be one of the best of the vintage on the Left-Bank’, giving a score of 96-99 points.  

Calling it ‘layered and fleshy’, William Kelley (Wine Advocate) gave the wine a barrel score of 94-96 points. 

Pricing analysis 

According to the Liv-ex Fair Value methodology, Market Prices of Château Mouton Rothschild are not strongly correlated with any critic scores, highlighting the power of the brand.   

While yesterday’s release is offers reasonable value, buyers looking for opportunities in back-vintages have options.  

The 2014 vintage, attaining a 97-point score from Neal Martin, is available at a discount to yesterday’s release and benefits from extra years in bottle. Since being released at £2,580 per 12×75, its Market Price has increased by 55.0%.  

Buyers looking for other opportunities might also want to consider the 97-point 2019 vintage, trading at a slight premium to yesterday’s release.
